Graeme Reed’s work explores ideas about ‘belonging’. His ‘fictionalised’ characters are deliberately ambiguous, torn between the desire to ‘fit in’ and the desire to ‘stand out’ at the same time. In his ‘Misfits of the World Unite’ series, with occasional references to the history of portrait painting, the characters playfully juxtapose brazen posturing with fashion insecurities, and social awkwardness. They are often surprising and sometimes menacing.
