Ruth Greenwood

PRINTMAKER PROFILE

BIOGRAPHY

Following an eight-year pause, Ruth resumed painting and drawing, delving into design ideas and illustration using art tools handed down from her maternal grandfather. In 2017, she began attending evening etching classes with Master Printmaker Nick Richards at Thames-Side Print Studios. This led to her joining the studio and learning extensively from Nick’s professional expertise in etching. Her works, such as the Acorns and Oakleaves Series and Still Life with Fruit series, are centred on objects, with each piece beginning as observational drawings, sketches, or her own photographs. She uses a dip pen for linear illustrations and explores a variety of techniques, including aquatint, sugar lift, spit bite, and mezzotint, soft ground and viscosity printing, chine collé and relief. Predominantly working on steel, Ruth also uses copper, or zinc substrates to etch into.

Her prints are all works on paper. Since 2022 Ruth has successfully shown her work in Derby Print Open, Ironbridge printmakers Competition, Southbank Printmaker mini print exhibition, Woolwich Print Fair, The Gallery at Green & Stone and Bankside Gallery in London. In July 2025 Ruth joined Greenwich Printmakers Associate. Ruth’s printmaking practice continues to evolve and is learning new techniques, experimenting with viscosity printing, and handmade white ground, to compliment her current etching skills and techniques.
