PRINTMAKER PROFILE

BIOGRAPHY

Nicki’s practice combines carefully planned and experimental printmaking to explore changing landscapes. Using a variety of techniques and processes, their work moves between the slow precision of mokuhanga where designs are carefully carved into wood and the more intuitive approach of collagraph, where textured surfaces and layered re-used and waste materials are built up to create richly tactile prints.

Water and rock are recurring elements in Nicki’s work, reflecting the natural forces that shape the landscape. Their practice considers how these elements
continually transform one another, while also interrogating how human activity is accelerating natural cycles. Themes of geology and coastal erosion run
throughout the work, highlighting the lasting impact of environmental change.

Materiality plays an important role in Nicki’s process and maintaining an environmentally responsible printmaking practice is central to their approach.
Materials and methods are carefully selected to align with the values and concerns behind the work. Nicki’s work seeks to reveal the shifting nature of our
landscapes, acknowledging environmental damage whilst allowing moments of beauty to emerge, creating space for viewers to slow down, reconnect, and reflect on their relationship with the natural world.
