Marie Wilson
PRINTMAKER PROFILE
ARTIST STATEMENT
I am a Leicester-based artist exploring printmaking, focussing on the Gelli plate. In this body of work I have explored using a variety of leaves and flowers focussing on layering acrylics to build a vibrant colour palette.
I find constant inspiration from my garden and an array of house plants. Plants have always been in my life and are a major source of therapy. As a visual artist I am interested in the emotion my work provokes. Exploring the cheese plant, leaves and flowers has led me to experiment with different compositions and find comfort in muscle memory by recreating images until a joyful aesthetic is created.
I have exhibited in Leicester’s Open exhibition, Cank Street gallery and recently Derby print 0pen where I won the Create Space prize. This led me to display my first solo exhibition in Wirksworth, Derby, Oct- Dec 2022.
I studied at the University of Leeds gaining a BA Hons in surface pattern. I am a member of Leicester Urban sketchers and Sketchbook circle, collaborating with other national artists and sharing the joy of creativity.
I am a special needs teacher with 24 years experience. Exploring the process of making art with students is endlessly rewarding and inspiring.
Winner of the Create Space Award (2022)
