PRINTMAKER PROFILE

BIOGRAPHY

My Art encompasses a number of different genres. I have always drawn from life and make studies from observation of my subject. However, lots of mental, emotional and pictorial stages are explored before I get to the finished work. I am a 5th Dan Black Belt in GoJu Ryu karate which I have practiced for over 30years. GoJu means hard/soft in Japanese. It is seen as contrasts or opposites. These contradictions influence my work especially in my  printmaking.

This along with atmospheric weather conditions, night, shadow along with romantic and dreamlike effects I strive to achieve through my work. Traditional etching is the medium I am most comfortable with for expressing these ideas. The monochrome intaglio print process gives unique qualities to finished picture. I find this medium is the one I achieve the results I am looking for.

I first started printmaking when I studied for a degree in Fine art over 50 years ago. I have recently rediscovered woodcut printing. The challenges of this process are different but the inspiration remains the same. I have recently had a solo Exhibition as well as had prints accepted in several group shows. My
prints were in the “Small but Mighty” print exhibition in the Bankside Gallery last year.
