Caitlin Iona Whitaker

PRINTMAKER PROFILE

ARTIST STATEMENT

Caitlin Whitaker is a printmaker and painter based in Edinburgh; currently completing five-years of study at Edinburgh College of Art. Printmaking in their practice encompasses an interesting paradox between subject matter and method; she is interested in an exploration of the everyday and the representational ways in which the mundane and domestic can be elevated. The innately tactile, manual and labour-intensive processes of relief printing transforms a quotidian subject, rendering its fleeting nature as both permanent and reproducible.

By creating images that are entirely inconsequential in their nature, printmaking’s traditional use as mode of communication is inverted. A tangle of impulses and experiences, combined with the urge to make things result in work that is simple, reflective and ultimately honest. Intimate scenes take on new meaning when rendered as precise, perpetual and tactile prints, depicting collected traces and memories of a unique life lived.
