PRINTMAKER PROFILE

ARTIST STATEMENT

Bernadette Koranteng is a figurative artist from Newcastle-upon-Tyne. She works in Printmaking and Mixed-media. Her work has been exhibited the National Portrait Gallery, The Royal Academy, Royal Festival Hall, The Mall Galleries and a number of independent galleries.

Bernadette studied Painting at the Royal Academy of Art, London, where she developed a passion for Life Drawing which became an important foundation in her work, whether as a life study in it’s own right or as part of a narrative piece. She is fascinated by the strength, beauty and diversity of the human form and its power to communicate ideas and emotions common to us all. She says ‘The Nude is timeless, powerful, vulnerable, sensuous, compassionate.’

In Landscape she is drawn to wild, windswept woodlands, places of dappled light and and deep shadow, hinting at stories and mystery.
As a lover of story-telling, myths and fables her work is often inspired by stories such as the Garden of Eden, exploring and re-imagining personal memories and experiences. Printmaking became her preferred vehicle for this narrative work as it enabled her to become more abstract and develop a more imaginative stylistic language, moving away from the more academic approach.

She now works mainly in Lino, Wood Engraving and Monoprint and is enjoying the ongoing learning experience and challenges of Printmaking.
