PRINTMAKER PROFILE

BIOGRAPHY

Ruth Greenwood is a printmaker based in London, her intricate still life etchings that capture both the delicacy and intensity of everyday objects. Born in Nottingham, Ruth’s early exposure to the rich cultural heritage of the UK inspired her to pursue a career in the arts. Returning to art in 2018 Ruth attended Nick Richards, master Printmakers etching class at Thames Side Studio.

For Ruth, etching is a process that allows her to explore the nuances of texture, form, and light. Her technique, which involves the meticulous use of a dip pen to create fine, fluid lines in the hardground on her etching plates, gives her work a distinct tactile quality. Each etching is a careful balance of precision and spontaneity, with the delicate marks made by the pen transforming ordinary objects into compositions that invite viewers to pause and reflect.
Through her still life work, Ruth captures the quiet elegance of everyday items—vases, bottles, fruits, flowers, and objects found in domestic spaces. She approaches these subjects not simply as representations, but as metaphors, giving each item a deeper significance. The focus on light and shadow in her work elevates the simplicity of the still life, turning objects that may seem mundane into subjects of profound beauty and meaning. Ruth’s compositions often play with contrasts, from the softness of a petal to the hard edges of glass or metal, creating a harmonious dialogue between the organic and the man-made.

Viewers are invited to see the world through Ruth’s eyes, where each piece is imbued with a sense of narrative and quiet introspection. Through her careful renderings of familiar objects, Ruth Greenwood elevates the simple to the sublime, capturing both the fragility and the endurance of the world around us.
