PRINTMAKER PROFILE

BIOGRAPHY

Rachel Tyreman is a self-taught linocut printmaker based in North Yorkshire. Her work is rooted in close observation of the natural world, often beginning in her garden or the surrounding countryside. She is drawn to small, passing moments, the morning light, unfurling leaves, glimpses of wildlife. Where the ordinary starts to feel quietly significant.

Her prints explore the space between the cultivated and the wild. Familiar plants, birds and natural forms are returned to through drawing and carving, becoming part of a visual language that is grounded in place but allows for something more instinctive. Subtle threads of folklore and myth sometimes appear, reflecting an interest in older ways of relating to the landscape.

Each piece is hand-carved and printed in small batches, embracing the physicality and slight unpredictability of the process. The act of carving is central to her practice: slow and attentive, allowing the image to emerge gradually. Her work invites a slower way of looking, one that lingers on detail, seasonality, and the balance between control and wildness. It reflects a sense of the untamed that continues to exist, even within the boundaries of the garden.
