James Turner

PRINTMAKER PROFILE

ARTIST STATEMENT

James Turner is a Birmingham-based artist and printmaker, lecturer and technician. In 2022 he founded Stirchley Printworks, a print studio and workshop based in south Birmingham. James studied for a BA in Fine Art at Birmingham City University and an MA in Multi-Disciplinary Printmaking at The University of The West of England, Bristol.

James’ medium of choice is screen printing, and explains that “the immediacy, accessibility, and graphic nature drew me to it”. His work largely focuses on the relationship between 2D and 3D, and his practice sometimes extends to sculpting and casting.

His most recent work documents elements of the endangered craft of handmade trimmings manufacturing. James’ family are one of the last manufacturers in the world to produce handmade trimmings and furnishings, and as his parents come close to retirement, James is using print to explore the craft and history of Turner Trimmings LTD and its 120-year history.
