PRINTMAKER PROFILE

ARTIST STATEMENT

J. Yuen Ling Chiu is a Woolwich-based printmaker and artist from Toronto, Canada. She has a BFAH in Printmaking from Queen’s University, Canada, and an MFA from the Slade School of Fine Art, UCL.

Her practice employs print to explore notions of memory, migration and empire, the traces of which are all around us. The research is diverse – from dockyards to housing tenements, pigeons to foreign flora, to music and play, but all of the work is underpinned by a strong dedication to developing a practice that is sustainable, inclusive and fit for our uncertain future.

In 2021, Ling received a ‘Develop Your Creative Practice’ grant from Arts Council England, which has allowed her to transition her printmaking practice to lower-toxicity, more sustainable methods and materials. She has a studio in Woolwich, and teaches regularly at Thames-side Print Studio. Ling is a member of The London Group, Printmakers Council, and Greenwich Printmakers.
